Brazil interested in appointing Pep Guardiola as coach, says report

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola is on the radar for international managerial jobs, including the much-touted Brazil job.

Brazil’s head coach Tite has stepped down after Brazil surprisingly crashed out of the World Cup in the quarterfinals against Croatia. With that being said, he mentioned his plans to leave after this World Cup before the tournament starts.

Still, Brazil does not have an immediate replacement. Now, Pep Guardiola could be the name at the top of the list of candidates on the radar for Brazil. Spanish publication SPORT says that the Brazilian federation will communicate with the Spanish coach in the coming days. He wants to gauge Guardiola’s interest in the job. In the past, Guardiola expressed his desire to enter the field of the national team.

The Brazilian organization considers Guardiola the best coach in the world. Hard to argue with his success at Barcelona, Bayern Munich and now Manchester City. As a manager, he’s only failed to win a league title three times since 2008/09. Interestingly, he happened only once in each of his coaching positions. He also has a pair of Champions League titles, both with Barcelona.

However, their lack of Champions League success in the face of staggering league dominance is a red flag for international play. The Champions League has a format similar to the World Cup or Copa América with group games. Then there is a qualifying part. Guardiola finds a way to fight in those unique matches, even if he dominates elsewhere.

Brazil wants Pep Guardiola to take over

Regardless, Guardiola has a squad that every team, at national or club level, wants. His current contract with Manchester City expires in 2025. There have been cases of coaches running club teams and also leading national teams. For example, Guus Hiddink managed Chelsea in 2009 as a caretaker role. At the same time, he was the head coach of Russia, as he competed in the 2008 World Cup qualifier and the 2010 Euro Cup.

Still, Brazil is not the only one trying to bring Pep Guardiola to its coaching staff. Even the United States has rumors of wanting its hat in the ring to conquer Guardiola. Then there are a number of head coach vacancies as a result of the 2022 World Cup.

Brazil will not make a decision until early 2023. It does not have competitive matches until late next year, when World Cup qualification returns.
