Gaynor to use Murphy as stepping stone to Hatton

Liam Gaynor [9-1] thinks he can tempt Campbell Hatton to fight if he can beat Colm Murphy [5(1)-0] to claim a domestic title.

It appears that Team Gaynor heard Murphy’s recent call to ‘get in touch to get in touch’ as a fight between Dubliner and the recently crowned BUI Featherweight Champion was made for the Hotel Europa and on Saturday 26 November .

The fight has already caught the attention of the public and is marked as an extremely intriguing fight. It’s also a fight that Gaynor is confident he will come out on top.

Having seen ‘Posh Boy’ end the perfect debut year with victory over Ruadhan Farrell in a BUI Celtic title fight on the Return of the Mick card on August 6, the Tallaght fighter claims he has seen weaknesses that can explode.

“I imagine against him because his performance against Farrell seemed a bit sloppy to me. He still got the win, but I feel like he would beat him if we got the go-ahead,” he said before the fight was officially confirmed.

Bolton-based Gaynor has fought in Ireland since defeating Krzysztof Rogowski at the City West hotel in 2017 and again speaking before the fight was officially confirmed, he admitted he wanted the fight to take place in Ireland.

“I would love for it to be in Ireland and have a homecoming for myself, whether it’s in their backyard or somewhere in between, I don’t care,” he adds.

Murphy’s BUI Celtic title win should make him a mandatory for the Irish title at featherweight. However, the fight was not sanctioned by the green belt and was confirmed as a defense of the BUI Celtic title. Murphy previously told Irish-boxing.com that he wouldn’t mind if that was the case, while Gaynor, 24, was easy when it came to which of two domestic honors would be on the line.

“Irish or Celtic title, it doesn’t matter, it’s another step up and then you can move on to bigger and better things.”

Although it may not be considered a challenge, a fight with Matchroom star Campbell Hatton would prove big. The Dub has called out Manc’s puncher before to no avail, but believes a title win may tempt Ricky Hatton’s son to risk sharing the ring with him.

“Campbell won’t bite, but with the Irish or Celtic title in my hands, he might find out. That could be a fight before the end of the year.”
