England v USA: Gareth Southgate has explained why he didn’t bring Phil Foden along during the England vs USA game in a Group B match at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
England had started their 2022 FIFA World Cup campaign with a comprehensive victory over Iran. The Three Lions defeated Iran, securing a 6-2 victory over the Asian nation.
However, Gareth Southgate’s men were unable to do the same in the England vs. USA match. The Three Lions shared points after a goalless draw in the England vs. United States match.
It was quite a disappointing performance from England, but they remain top of Group B, with four points from two games.
England vs USA: Why did Gareth Southgate snub Phil Foden at the FIFA World Cup match?
Speaking after the match, Gareth Southgate was asked why he didn’t bring in Phil Foden in the second half of the England vs USA match.
Gareth Southgate had opted for the same starting XI that started in their win over Iran. That meant Phil Foden started the game on the bench.
However, as the England vs USA FIFA World Cup match progressed and the game was still goalless, Gareth Southgate was expected to replace Phil Foden. Gareth Southgate made three changes in the second half, but Phil Foden was not among them.
Gareth Southgate brought on Marcus Rashford, Jack Grealish and Jordan Henderson in the second half, while Phil Foden remained as an unused substitute.
When asked about his decision not to bring in Phil Foden, Gareth Southgate said: “We wanted to keep the same team from the start.
“With the wide players, we opted for Jack [Grealish] and marcus [Rashford] instead of Phil [Foden] on the substitutions as we felt Jack would hold the ball well for us and get us upfield and Marcus’ speed would be a threat going into the latter part of the game.”
Meanwhile, Iran secured a 2-0 win over Wales in a Group B match at the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The win moved Iran to second place in Group B at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Meanwhile, Gareth Southgate’s men will wrap up their 2022 FIFA World Cup group campaign by taking on Wales. England will aim to progress to the next stage of the competition and finish the group campaign on a high.
